FIA open review into Lewis Hamilton’s conduct

Lewis Hamilton has already been fined €50,000 for walking across the Losail International Circuit following his collision with George Russell in Qatar

The FIA will review an incident where Lewis Hamilton walked across a live race track following his opening-lap retirement from the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

Starting from third, Hamilton challenged teammate George Russell for second place into Turn 1, but the pair made contact which sent the seven-time world champion into the gravel and out of the race.

Hamilton then crossed a live race track to return to the paddock during the subsequent safety car period, earning him a reprimand and a fine of €50,000 by the stewards.

“The FIA is revisiting the incident in which Lewis Hamilton crossed a live track during the Qatar Grand Prix,” an FIA spokesperson told

“The FIA notes that Lewis was apologetic during the subsequent stewards hearing into the incident and acknowledged that the crossing was a serious safety breach.

“However, in view of his role model status, the FIA is concerned about the impression his actions may have created on younger drivers.”

Qatar walk one of many run-ins with FIA

Although it is his first reprimand of 2023, Qatar is another incident where Hamilton has drawn the ire of the FIA for his off-track conduct.

When regulations regarding jewellery and underwear were enforced at the start of 2022 by new race directors Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas, Hamilton refused to remove his jewellery, putting him at risk of a ban.

But, Hamilton and the FIA reached an agreement before the 2022 Bahrain GP, where he received a medical exemption to wear jewellery due to the potential extreme pain caused by removing a nose piercing.

Hamilton also received a fine of €50,000 for skipping the 2021 FIA Gala awards ceremony in Paris after controversially losing the world championship to Max Verstappen at the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP
