Daniel Ricciardo reveals 2023 US GP damage that ruined his race

Daniel Ricciardo has revealed damage sustained during the 2023 United States Grand Prix ruined his race, as he returned to the cockpit following four races on the sidelines with a broken wrist.

The incident, caused by debris, ended his chances of scoring points at the Circuit of the Americas. He tried a one-stop strategy to attempt to make something out of nothing, before pitting for a fastest lap bid with some soft tyres in the dying embers of the race.

But, AlphaTauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda, also later pitted and claimed the fastest lap by going 0.227 faster, seven laps after the Ricciardo‘s attempt.

“I guess it was debris, because they mentioned [Lance] Stroll,” Ricciardo said to media after the race. “I think we got pretty close, but I don’t think we touch so I think we must have picked up some debris somewhere and that made our race pretty miserable, I won’t lie.

“We’re already trying to get, at best, a top 10 car into the top 10 and when you put damage into it, we are certainly, certainly out of the points.”

Ricciardo recommended retiring the car

It was far from how Ricciardo had hoped his Formula 1 return would go, as he came home last of the running cars by languishing in 17th, which changed to 15th following the disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

The 36-year-old revealed that he didn’t want to stay out for the remainder of the race when it was obvious that points were off the table.

“I was obviously trying not to be too negative,” Ricciardo continued. “But I was saying, ‘Guys, I can’t really do anything’ and kind of suggesting, ‘Do we just box, either call it a day or try to fix it and learn something?’ Because we weren’t learning anything.

“So we got to a point where I said, ‘Okay, we’ll try to at least say can we fix it?’, so I asked him [his engineer] and he said, ‘Yeah, we’ll pick it and try to fix it up.’

“I don’t know if it was front-wing or brake ducts but they put the soft on and it was a bit better, but I don’t think it was still that impressive.”
