F1 2023 Canadian Grand Prix – Qualifying results

As has become the norm in the 2023 F1 season, Max Verstappen in the Red Bull is on pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix following a rain affected qualifying session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, over a second ahead of Nico Hulkenberg in the Haas, who got their first ever front row start. 

Fernando Alonso put his Aston Martin third, just ahead of the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell before the red flag was brought out in Q3 when McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri hit the wall. 

A brilliant strategy call from Alex Albon put the Williams driver on slick tyres early in Q2 and it paid off as he made it through to Q3 where he qualified in 10th position. 

Both Sergio Perez in the Red Bull and Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari failed to make it out of Q2 as the misjudged the changeable weather conditions, as did Aston Martin with Lance Stroll, who was also eliminated early. 

Alpine‘s Pierre Gasly was the big casualty in Q1 after his fastest lap, which would have seen him comfortably through to Q2, was compromised by Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari going slow at the final chicane.
