A brilliant lap from Charles Leclerc gave the Ferrari driver pole position for the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, ahead of title rival Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, his fourth time starting first in 2022.
There was some late drama as Leclerc spun in his first run of Q3, then in the second runs Verstappen had a DRS issue with his Red Bull and had to go back to the pits, meaning he was unable to set a second time.
The Mercedes cars showed that their upgrade package worked, with George Russell qualifying in fourth, and Lewis Hamilton sixth.
Mick Schumacher managed to get into Q3 for the first time in his career, and eventually placed 10th, just behind the McLaren of Daniel Ricciardo.
And after all the controversy over the Aston Martin upgrades, the Silverstone based team were unable to get out of Q3, with Lance Stroll qualifying in 18th and Sebastian Vettel only managing 15th place.
