Lando Norris wins dramatic Dutch GP as McLaren star reignites title fight

-

Lando Norris produced one of the defining performances of his 2026 season to win a dramatic Dutch Grand Prix, overcoming a red flag, tricky conditions and a determined challenge from Kimi Antonelli to claim back-to-back victories for McLaren.

The final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort delivered a race worthy of the occasion, with Norris turning pole position into victory in a contest that featured changing strategies, a restart and intense battles throughout the field.

The race was immediately thrown into chaos when Max Verstappen crashed heavily on the opening lap. The Red Bull Racing driver lost control at Turn 14 after running onto the damp inside line and hit the barriers hard, bringing out the red flags.

Thankfully, Verstappen confirmed he was okay after the impact, but the incident forced a complete reset as the field prepared for a second standing start.

When racing resumed, Kimi Antonelli made the perfect launch from second place and moved ahead of Norris into Turn 1. The Mercedes driver forced his rival wide and immediately took control of the race, while Oscar Piastri moved into third after passing George Russell.

However, the battle at the front was far from settled. With teams split across different tyre strategies, the advantage changed repeatedly as drivers searched for the perfect balance between pace and durability.

Antonelli initially looked in control, building a small advantage over Norris, but the McLaren driver stayed within striking distance and continued applying pressure.

The turning point came when the leaders began cycling through pit stops. Norris emerged with stronger pace on fresher tyres, while Antonelli struggled to maintain the same level of grip as the race entered its decisive phase.

The crucial moment arrived when Norris closed onto the rear of Antonelli and found his opportunity at Turn 1. With Lewis Hamilton ahead of them defending from the recovering Ferrari, the championship contender used the opportunity to launch his attack.

Norris committed to the move and completed the pass on Antonelli, taking the lead of the Dutch GP on merit.

“The move was good, I knew I wouldn’t get many chances,” Norris said after the race. “I saw Lewis defending and I knew that was my moment. That move won me the race.”

Once ahead, Norris controlled the final stages brilliantly, extending his advantage and securing another important victory in the championship battle.

The result has brought fresh confidence to McLaren, although Norris remained cautious about his title hopes.

“One race at a time. A lot of people say it now, but it is the truth of it,” Norris said. “There are plenty of things we can do better, and we need to do better if we want to fight for a Championship.”

Behind the winner, Antonelli held onto second place despite losing his chance at victory, while Russell completed the podium after a challenging afternoon managing older tyres.

“It was a very intense race,” Antonelli admitted. “Managed to get the lead, but on stint two onwards, I didn’t have the feeling with the car. I was sliding a lot, Lando passed me and I knew I had no chance after that.”

Russell was satisfied with third after a difficult afternoon.

“Difficult start for me, losing the position. These two were very quick at the beginning, and then it was tough to hold on on those old tyres,” he said.

Charles Leclerc finished fifth after another strong Ferrari performance, while Hamilton missed out on the podium despite fighting for the position until the final laps.

Further back, Piastri finished sixth after struggling to match the pace of the leading cars, while Liam Lawson recovered from a penalty to take seventh. Nico Hulkenberg continued Audi’s impressive run with eighth, ahead of Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly.

As Formula 1 says goodbye to Zandvoort, Norris ensured the circuit’s final appearance produced a memorable race, while the championship battle enters its next phase with momentum firmly shifting towards McLaren.
