The Shanghai street circuit witnessed a thrilling close to Round 10 of the 2025 Formula E World Championship as Maximilian Guenther and Jean-Eric Vergne secured a landmark 1-2 finish for DS Penske.
While Guenther had built a late-race energy advantage over the leaders, it was Vergne who stunned the paddock with a two-car overtake on the final lap to snatch second place from Taylor Barnard and Dan Ticktum.
Guenther timed his attack perfectly in Shanghai, taking advantage of extra Attack Mode energy and passing Oliver Rowland with just a few laps to go. With cleaner air and superior efficiency, he surged to the front and never looked back.
The win was his first of the season and marked a strong turnaround for the German after a tough few weekends.

“Amazing! A 1-2 for the team, I’m so happy,” Guenther said after the Round 10 Shanghai E-Prix. “A real masterclass this race, I think the strategy, the pace, the execution, the moves, everything was nice. This weekend we certainly got [the momentum] back!”
Behind him, Vergne executed a different approach, saving Attack Mode until later than his rivals and pouncing when it mattered most. The double champion muscled past Barnard and Ticktum in a gritty final-lap manoeuvre, even damaging his front wing in the process.

“I left a little bit of my front wing in the last corner, I think a bit of my wrist as well,” Vergne admitted. “Honestly I don’t know, I just went for it… I thought that since everyone was attacking, I should save a bit more energy and try to use it towards the end – and it paid off quite nicely.”
Rowland stays ahead in standings despite late shuffle
Championship leader Oliver Rowland had led during the late phase but ultimately slipped to fifth after being overtaken by Guenther and caught in the scramble behind. His Nissan teammate Norman Nato finished sixth after a well-managed energy stint.
Barnard, who at one stage looked on course for a stunning win after slicing through the field from sixth, faded in the closing laps due to energy concerns but held on for third.
The McLaren driver admitted confusion over how the race played out: “Honestly, my main emotion is that I’m a bit confused! I was sitting at the back for a very long time… I need to look at the race after to understand a little bit better what’s actually happened.”
Despite the drama, Rowland retains a commanding lead atop the drivers’ championship with 171 points. Barnard moves into second on 85, just one point ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, while Nissan continues to top both the teams’ and manufacturers’ standings.
