Disaster for Jaguar and Cassidy sees Da Costa triumph in Portland

Nick Cassidy looked to have secured victory at the 2024 Portland E-Prix Round 13, but an uncharacteristic mistake allowed Da Costa and Porsche to take the win

Antonio Felix da Costa clinched victory in a thrilling Round 13 of the 2024 Formula E season at the Portland E-Prix, overcoming a chaotic race that saw Driver Standings leader Nick Cassidy lose the lead due to a costly mistake on the penultimate lap. Cassidy’s error allowed Da Costa to seize the win, marking another significant moment in the Formula E season.

Cassidy and Jaguar appeared to have the race under control, with the New Zealander taking the lead on Lap 23 of the 27-lap race. Despite a five-second penalty for his teammate Mitch Evans, who was running interference for Cassidy, a Jaguar one-two finish seemed inevitable.

However, Cassidy‘s overconfidence proved detrimental as he ran wide at Turn 11 and spun after taking too much kerb, and subsequently dropping from first to 19th. That blunder handed the victory to Da Costa, who managed to keep his cool amidst the chaos that unfolded on the Portland International Raceway.

Evans did cross the finish line first, but the five-second penalty that he was given for contact with Jake Hughes earlier in the race dropped the Kiwi to eighth place which incensed Evans. “A disgrace, it’s a clear disgrace,” he said after the race.

Impact of Da Costa Portland win

Da Costa‘s win, his third in four races, propels him further up the standings, emphasising his current form in what was the fastest race in Formula E history, averaging 152.041 km/h..

Cassidy‘s 19th place finish failed to significantly impact his lead in the standings, reducing his margin from 25 to 24 points over Pascal Wehrlein, with Evans trailing by another three points in third. In the Teams’ Championship, Porsche closed the gap on Jaguar, who now lead by 16 points.

With Round 14 scheduled to follow at Portland on June 30, fans can expect another intense battle as drivers and teams continue to vie for the championship with just three races left of the Formula E season.
