Daniel Ricciardo slaps back at Jacques Villeneuve: All those people can suck it

Jacques Villeneuve told Daniel Ricciardo "If you can’t cut it, go home" before he qualified fifth at the 2024 Canadian GP

Daniel Ricciardo provided the perfect response to Jacques Villeneuve saying the Australian no longer deserves a place in Formula 1 by qualifying fifth at the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, and was gunning for 1997 world champion immediately afterwards.

Villeneuve questioned why Ricciardo was still in F1 after criticising his performance over the last five years, telling Sky Sports “If you can’t cut it, go home and let someone else take your place, there’s no reason to keep finding excuses”.

However, with Yuki Tsunoda handed a contract extension at RB just before qualifying began, Ricciardo stole the show by gatecrashing the top five, three places ahead of teammate while Red Bull‘s Sergio Perez was eliminated in Q1.

“I still don’t know what he said, I heard he’s been talking s**t, but he always does,” Ricciardo told select members of the press including Total-Motorsport.com. “I think he’s hit his head a few too many times, I don’t know if he plays ice hockey or something, anyway I won’t give him the time of day, but all those people can suck it.

“I want to say more, but it’s alright, we’ll leave him behind.”

Ricciardo produced his best session of the year on the 10th anniversary of his maiden F1 victory at the 2014 Canadian GP, the first time that Mercedes had been beaten that season as the smiling assassin outshone Sebastian Vettel in his debut campaign at Red Bull.

Ricciardo‘s yet to score grand prix points in 2024 but was only one place off the Miami sprint podium and was cruelly denied an almost certain top 10 finish in China too thanks to a Lance Stroll blunder, and Montreal provides his best chance of breaking that duck so far.

Ricciardo reveals catalyst for Canada change

Ricciardo began the season being talked up as a possible to contender to replace Perez at Red Bull in 2025, but talk has turned more to the potential of Liam Lawson taking his RB seat as the year’s progressed.

Perez also signed a new contract after the Monaco GP despite a dire performance at F1’s most iconic race, while Tsunoda‘s extended stay at RB means Ricciardo‘s is the only Red Bull drive open for the Kiwi.

However, Ricciardo isn’t going down without a fight and he revealed he’d spoken to members of his team after a disappointing 12th in Monaco to analyse and improve his chances of success for the rest of the season.

“A lot of it was kind of just probably management, like energy management over the course of the weekend,” Ricciardo added. “So it’s not even what I’m doing in the car, it’s just what gets me into the car feeling like I’m f*****g ready to go.

“I was just trying to clean up some of those things, if there was anything on my mind, try to get it off my chest and I just got into this weekend feeling certainly a bit lighter and just hungry and happy and ready to say ‘f**k you’ to a few people.”
