An extraordinary chapter in Formula 1 came to a sudden, emotional close on Wednesday morning, as Christian Horner faced the Red Bull Racing workforce for the last time in his role as team principal and CEO.
The 51-year-old, who had led the Milton Keynes-based team through two decades of triumph and turbulence, broke down in tears during his farewell speech, visibly shaken by the abrupt end to his tenure.
Horner’s departure comes after a tumultuous period both on and off the track for Red Bull. Only hours after learning that his time at the helm was over, Horner stood before staff and offered a deeply personal message.
“Yesterday I was informed by Red Bull that operationally I would no longer be involved with the business or the team moving forward from this gathering. I will still remain employed by the company but operationally the baton will be handed over. That obviously came as a shock, obviously to myself,” Horner told colleagues in footage obtained by Sky Sports.
The emotional farewell was met with a standing ovation and applause from staff, as Horner continued, “What I have had time to do is reflect over the last 12 hours or so and I wanted to stand in front of all of you and express my gratitude to each and every single member of the team that has given so much during the last 20-and-a-half years that I’ve been here.
“When I arrived 20 years ago, with fewer grey hairs, I walked into a team and I didn’t know what to expect but I was immediately welcomed and, in two run-down buildings, we started to build what became a powerhouse in Formula 1. Watching and being part of this team has been the biggest privilege in my life.”

Shockwaves through Formula 1 paddock
The news of Horner’s sacking sent shockwaves throughout the Formula 1 community. His exit marks the end of the longest-serving principal’s reign in the sport, a tenure that saw Red Bull claim eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles, transforming from underdogs to dominant force under Horner’s stewardship. His partnership with drivers such as Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen redefined the competitive landscape of the modern era.
Horner’s final days at Red Bull were clouded by controversy. In early 2024, he faced accusations of inappropriate behavior toward a team employee. Though he was twice cleared by external investigations, the fallout persisted, culminating in his abrupt exit. The pressure of the scandal was compounded by a dip in Red Bull’s on-track form, with rivals McLaren and Ferrari overtaking the once-dominant team.
Throughout the ordeal, Horner was supported by his wife, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, who stood by him despite the damaging leaks and internal power struggles. She famously urged him to “make it all go away,” a feat he managed for over a year until the team decided to make a change at the top.

Max Verstappen pays tribute to Horner’s legacy
In the wake of Horner’s departure, tributes poured in from across the paddock, but none more significant than from Red Bull’s superstar driver, Max Verstappen. The reigning world champion, who spent a decade working alongside Horner, shared his gratitude on social media: “From my first race win, to four world championships, we have shared incredible successes. Winning memorable races and breaking countless records. Thank you for everything, Christian!”
Despite the emotional scenes and outpouring of support, questions remain about the team’s future and whether the fractures exposed by Horner’s exit will heal. With key figures such as Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley also having departed, Red Bull faces a period of rebuilding both on and off the track.
