Cause of Kimi Antonelli Azerbaijan GP Qualifying crash revealed: “I’m very mad about it”

Antonelli will start Saturday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 16th.

Kimi Antonelli reveals he was the cause of his crash in Qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP as the Formula 1 championship leader admits he failed to anticipate extra grip at the Baku City Circuit.

Coming into the latest weekend of the 2026 F1 season, the message from the 20-year-old was one of composure and focus as he stressed that the tight fight was not yet over despite an 81-point lead.

However, that focus and composure appeared to desert him in Q1 in the wake of a resurgent George Russell leading him through all three Free Practice sessions next to the Caspian Sea.

Shortly after placing his banker lap on the board, the Italian looked to go again but as he began his lap, he got too aggressive on the entry of Turn 1 and hit the wall, breaking his Mercedes.

With a failed tyre and track rod damage, he was ordered to pull over by his race engineer Peter Bonnington and found himself out of the session as he fell to 16th come the end of Q1.

It was a rare sight to see the eight-time Grand Prix winner parking up and ending his afternoon prematurely as he starts Saturday’s race with a huge recovery drive to score meaningful points.

And matters were made worse for the Bologna-born driver as Russell went on to secure a brilliant pole position with a lap eight tenths quicker than what the second-placed Charles Leclerc could offer.

But rather than blame other factors in Qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP, Antonelli shows a respectable degree of humility as he revealed that he was the cause of his crash on September 25.

“The grip was coming up very quickly, lap by lap,” Antonelli told Sky Sports F1. “Obviously I turned in and sadly I had a lot more front end compared to the lap before.

“And I touched the wall. So, a mistake from my side, very unnecessary. To be fair I’m very mad about it and will try to do better tomorrow.

“The car has been very strong this weekend. George [Russell] has been doing incredibly well.

“But yeah, we’ll try our best tomorrow to recover as many places as possible.”

Antonelli must recreate Monza heroics in Baku

Antonelli now starts from 16th on the grid in what is a relatively familiar starting spot for the young driver after he began the Italian GP from 19th and managed to claim a thrilling victory.

On that day and armed with a fresh power unit, he impressively cut through the entire field and by Lap 20 had taken the lead away from Russell as the pair began to duel at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

It was Antonelli who eventually won out after pitting for fresh tyres under the virtual safety car as he reeled in his colleague and completed the pass on Lap 50 – going on to win by 3.8 seconds.

Now if the champion-elect hopes to save his weekend by scoring good points, he must cut through the field once again but this time he cannot afford any mistakes, as the narrow track width will punish him.

An error like the one he made on Lap 49 when he ran wide and headed through the gravel could result in a DNF and would open the door to Russell to narrowing the gap in the standings by 25 points.
