Carlos Sainz provides update on search for F1 2025 drive as seats get snapped up

The Ferrari driver is set to b e replaced by Lewis Hamilton in 2025 and has yet to find a new team for the next F1 season

Carlos Sainz revealed he isn’t very close to securing his spot on the 2025 Formula 1 grid as he admitted discussion progress has been prolonged, despite the grid places slowly, but surely, being snapped up for next season.

The 29-year-old had his future thrust into jeopardy when Ferrari dropped him in favor of Lewis Hamilton in February, in what was one of the biggest shocks to the driver market in recent years after the current Mercedes driver had recently extended his deal there.

And although he’s one of just two drivers to beat Max Verstappen in 2024 and one of just five drivers since the start of 2022, the Spaniard is yet to commit his future in the sport to a particular team.

That’s despite being in the form of his life and giving Charles Leclerc a very difficult time at Ferrari, as Red Bull, Mercedes and Audi are all keeping a watchful eye on Sainz and the level he continues to deliver at.

“Don’t worry when I have them [news], you’ll know,” Sainz told select members of the press, including When asked how far away a deal is, he added, “I think so. It’s not moving too quick.”

Time is running out for Sainz

Red Bull now seem relatively happy with Sergio Perez, whilst Sainz appears to be Mercedes’ third pick behind Max Verstappen and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Audi are also very interested, but Sainz also hasn’t committed to them either, despite a lucrative financial offer according to Helmut Marko.

In the meantime, other seats such as Aston Martin, Sauber and Williams have all been taken up for next year, and RB‘s spots are almost exclusively reserved for Red Bull‘s in-house talent pool to be developed.

So, there isn’t a lot of time left for Sainz to get his boots into a 2025 F1 car. It leaves a question: What is Sainz waiting for?

Could he be waiting on Verstappen‘s decision? Red Bull are currently losing lots of important personnel as inter-team tensions with Christian Horner continue to rage on and Verstappen could also be one of those who decides to search for new pastures as he repeatedly flirts with Mercedes.

If the Dutchman drops that bombshell then that leaves Sainz as one of the best immediate options considering their long-time target, Lando Norris, recently committed his future to McLaren, whilst Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo appear to be failing to impress Red Bull’s leaders.
