Carlos Sainz confirms talks with several F1 teams as Ferrari star looks to secure 2025 seat

Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari in 2025 replacing the Spaniard at the Italian F1 team

Carlos Sainz has revealed he is speaking to every single Formula 1 team to discuss a potential drive for the 2025 season, and hopes to have his future sorted out sooner rather than later.

The Spaniard has been in fine form in the first three races of the 2024 campaign, securing a podium finish at the Bahrain GP and claiming his third win for Ferrari at the Australian Grand Prix with a thoroughly impressive drive.

Sainz’s performances have caught the eye of several teams looking to fill seats on the grid next year, including Mercedes and his former employers Red Bull, with the driver market already buzzing with anticipation.

His future could rest firmly upon what Max Verstappen decides, with the Dutchman linked with a surprise move to Mercedes to replace Lewis Hamilton, who is taking Sainz’s seat with the Scuderia.

And the 29-year-old has lifted the lid on his negotiations so far, which are handled by his cousin and manager Carlos Onoro, as he looks to secure a drive for next year.

“I’m talking to a few [teams] because that’s what my management team and myself should do when I don’t have a job for next year yet,” Sainz told reporters in Japan. “So we’re talking to pretty much all of them.

“It’s just a matter of going more into detail and seeing the more realistic options, and what are the best options for me and for my future. I don’t have any news for you, nothing to say here today. The only thing I would say is that it’s time now to speed everything up a bit and hopefully we can get it sorted sooner rather than later.”

Catching Red Bull

After Verstappen’s shock retirement in Australia allowed Ferrari to secure a 1-2 finish, the Italian manufacturer have closed the gap in the constructors’ championship heading into the Japanese GP in Suzuka – and Sainz’s recovery from appendix surgery is improving with every day.

However, Sainz is under no illusions that the RB20 remains the quicker car and with their upgrades to the rear wing not arriving until later in the season, he is unsure whether they can repeat their heroics in the Far East.

“It’s true to say that in Australia, we looked very strong. But I think normally in these cases, you just need to get the average of the first few races,” Sainz added. “And I think the average is we’re still a couple of tenths off the Red Bull and we need an upgrade especially for Suzuka to fight them.

“I think the job that the team has done this year is extremely good because the car is a very good step forward. It’s just we need more of the same if we want to go for the wins at tracks like maybe Japan and there is no big upgrade coming here.

“We have a very small thing in the car at the rear, but it will come later in the season and I hope that is another good step in the same direction.”
