Aston Martin‘s recent coup of signing Adrian Newey, arguably the greatest designer in Formula 1 history, has raised significant expectations for the team’s potential to contend for an F1 title by 2026.
With 14 championship-winning cars under his belt, Newey will join Aston Martin in March 2025 after ending his 19-year tenure at Red Bull. Many view this move as potentially more impactful than any driver change, including the headline-grabbing switch of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari.
Newey‘s arrival could mark a pivotal turning point for Aston Martin, currently only fifth in the Constructors’ Championship but with ambitions far greater for the future. Over 32 years, Newey has masterminded 12 drivers’ and 13 constructors’ championships, firmly establishing himself as the sport’s leading technical innovator.
His preference for drafting designs on a traditional drawing board – rather than relying on computer-aided design (CAD) – demonstrates his unique and highly successful approach to car aerodynamics and downforce optimisation.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner famously said of Newey, “He lives in the matrix. He’s still very hands-on, he’s still at his drawing board.” Newey’s exit from Red Bull earlier in 2024 has coincided with a noticeable drop in the team’s performance, prompting speculation about how integral his role was to their sustained dominance.
Red Bull has downplayed the significance of Newey‘s departure, with Horner saying, “One man’s input could never be so dramatic so quickly.” However, the timing of the team’s dip in form after Newey’s departure has many in the paddock wondering if his absence is being felt more than the team is willing to admit.

Success Amid Regulation Changes
One of Newey’s defining strengths has been his ability to design F1 title-winning cars during periods of major regulatory change. This skill is one of the reasons Aston Martin is particularly excited about his arrival, especially with a new set of Formula 1 regulations on the horizon for the 2026 season.
These rule changes, which include updates to car aerodynamics and the introduction of Honda power units for Aston Martin, offer the ideal opportunity for Newey to work his design magic. Historically, Newey has excelled in adapting to new regulations.
In 1998, his McLaren design dominated after F1 moved to narrower cars. Red Bull’s rise to prominence in 2009, following another regulation change, further demonstrated Newey’s talent, despite Brawn GP’s controversial double diffuser that year.

From 2010 to 2013, Sebastian Vettel won four consecutive world championships in cars designed by Newey, cementing his legacy as F1’s premier designer.
More recently, Newey designed Red Bull’s ground-effect cars for the 2022 season, resulting in a record-breaking 15 wins for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman followed that with 19 victories in 2023, including 10 consecutive wins.
If history is any indicator, Aston Martin could be poised to benefit from Newey’s expertise as the new regulations roll in.
Building a Dream Engineering Team
Newey’s appointment is just one piece of the puzzle Aston Martin is assembling. Lawrence Stroll, who took over the team in 2021, has invested heavily in the squad, building a new state-of-the-art factory and wind tunnel at their Silverstone base. This infrastructure is critical to Stroll‘s vision of transforming Aston Martin into a F1 world title-winning team.

In addition to Newey, Aston Martin has also signed other top engineering talents. Dan Fallows, who worked alongside Newey at Red Bull, joined the team in 2022 as technical director. Enrico Cardile, Ferrari’s former head of aerodynamics, will take on the role of chief technical officer in 2025. The team has also brought in Andy Cowell, a key figure behind Mercedes’ dominance in the turbo-hybrid era, as their new CEO.
With Newey and these top-tier engineers in place, Aston Martin is positioning itself as a technical powerhouse. Stroll’s ambitions were clear when he said, “Adrian is the best in the world at what he does – he is at the top of his game – and I am incredibly proud that he is joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 Team.”
The Fernando Alonso Factor
Alongside their technical recruitment, Aston Martin boasts one of the most experienced and skilled drivers on the grid: Fernando Alonso. The two-time world champion signed a contract extension in 2023, ensuring he will be with the team until at least the end of 2026.
Alonso, who has consistently delivered strong performances for Aston Martin since joining, will be crucial in extracting the best from Newey’s designs.

While Alonso’s ability to deliver results is unquestionable, Aston Martin’s second driver, Lance Stroll, could be seen as a potential weak link.
Despite his inconsistent performances, Lance‘s seat at the team appears secure as long as his father, Lawrence Stroll, remains the owner. However, should Aston Martin produce a title-contending car by 2026, other top drivers will undoubtedly be eyeing a future with the team.
Aiming for 2026 F1 Title Challenge
Aston Martin’s 2023 season started promisingly, with Fernando Alonso securing eight podium finishes and ending fourth in the drivers’ standings. However, the team has since struggled to maintain that level of performance.
In the background, though, their new factory and wind tunnel have been completed, which will be critical in developing competitive cars for the future.
“We can do much more of our own testing in the way that we want, and it gives us much more flexibility,” said Dan Fallows. “There have been lots of examples of things we wanted to do but couldn’t because of the limitations.”

Aston Martin will also benefit from their exclusive partnership with Honda, starting in 2026. The Japanese manufacturer, which powered Red Bull’s recent championship successes, will provide engines for Aston Martin.
Honda’s return to the sport has been highly anticipated, especially after their resurgence with Red Bull following a difficult spell with McLaren in the mid-2010s.
All Eyes on Aston Martin
The countdown to the 2026 season has already begun, and expectations are higher than ever for Aston Martin. With Adrian Newey joining a team that boasts a state-of-the-art factory, elite engineers, a world-class driver in Fernando Alonso, and Honda engines, the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place.
Ultimately, the true impact of Newey‘s arrival will only be revealed when the 2026 season kicks off. Will Aston Martin become the dominant force they aspire to be? With Newey’s track record of turning teams into title contenders, it would be unwise to bet against them. All eyes will be on Aston Martin as they aim to make their mark on Formula 1’s new era.
