Rain affected FP2 session

Norris continued his strong performance at Silverstone by leading the second practice session for the 2024 British Grand Prix, and with a persistent 60% chance of rain, teams were eager to maximise dry track time, resulting in a flurry of activity at the start of FP2.

Drivers initially ran on medium tyres, with Verstappen setting an early pace of 1:27.831s for Red Bull. Charles Leclerc struggled through Maggots and Becketts, and Carlos Sainz noted the track seemed slower due to windy conditions. Verstappen then switched to soft tyres and briefly topped the timesheets, setting the fastest lap on this compound for the first time.

Aston Martin rebounded from a tough Austrian GP with strong showings from Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, who were competitive throughout the session. Norris reclaimed the top spot with a 1:26.549s lap midway through FP2 but experienced a minor off-track moment, prompting a check of his car’s floor.

As the session progressed, warnings of impending rain led to varied run strategies. Despite the late rainfall, Norris maintained his lead, finishing 0.331s ahead of Piastri. Perez secured third place, followed by Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg in a surprising fourth. Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top six.

Verstappen ended up seventh, with Sainz eighth and Stroll ninth. George Russell rounded out the top 10 for Mercedes. Just outside the top 10, Alonso placed 11th, and Valtteri Bottas took 12th for Sauber. Alex Albon, sporting a Union Jack livery for Williams, finished 13th, followed by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.

Yuki Tsunoda, recovering from his FP1 incident, was 16th for RB. Logan Sargeant, Zhou Guanyu, Daniel Ricciardo, and Kevin Magnussen filled positions 17 to 20.
