Lewis Hamilton claimed Sprint pole at the 2026 British GP after edging Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds in a dramatic Sprint Qualifying session at Silverstone.
The Ferrari driver set a 1:28.376 on his only SQ3 run to beat Antonelli, with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull Racing after a stronger showing than his FP1 pace had suggested.
Charles Leclerc qualified fourth in the second Ferrari, ahead of George Russell, who could only manage fifth after struggling to match Antonelli through the session.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were sixth and seventh for McLaren, while Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls both got two cars into SQ3.

Hamilton beats Antonelli to Sprint pole
Hamilton had already topped FP1 and carried that momentum into Sprint Qualifying, finishing fastest in SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3. The final margin was tiny, but the result was another reminder of his enduring authority around Silverstone.
Piastri was the first driver to complete a lap in SQ3, setting a 1:28.772, before Norris beat him by three hundredths of a second. But the real fight quickly shifted to Antonelli and Hamilton, with the Mercedes driver going faster than the McLaren pair before the home favorite delivered the lap that mattered.
A 1:28.376 was enough for Hamilton to take Sprint pole by 0.011 seconds, putting Ferrari at the front for Saturday’s short race and giving the home crowd a major moment to celebrate.
Leclerc could not match his teammate and ended up fourth, but two Ferrari cars inside the top four still marked a strong response after the team had arrived at Silverstone unsure whether the circuit would suit its package.

Russell only fifth as Mercedes split
Antonelli again looked calm and precise across the session, gradually closing the gap to Hamilton as the track evolved. He was second in SQ2, just 0.099 seconds behind the Ferrari, then missed Sprint pole by almost nothing in the final eight-minute shootout.
Russell, though, had a more difficult session at home. He had been under pressure in SQ2 after sitting near the elimination zone, before improving late enough to make SQ3.
The final run was not enough to put him on the front row, with Russell ending up fifth, 0.357 seconds behind Hamilton and 0.346 seconds adrift of Antonelli. That gives him work to do in the Sprint, especially with Verstappen and Leclerc starting ahead.
The result also continues a recent trend of Antonelli looking more consistent over one lap, while Russell has had to work harder to piece together his fastest attempts.
