F1 2025 British GP Free Practice 2: Lando Norris fastest in FP2, Ferrari’s quick again

Track action ramps up in FP2 as teams look for answers and fans pack the circuit for a taste of the weekend’s drama

-

Hello and welcome to this Total Motorsport live blog for Free Practice 2 at the F1 2025 British GP from the iconic Silverstone circuit in the United Kingdom.

The opening session of the 2025 British Grand Prix saw Lewis Hamilton remind the Silverstone faithful why he remains a force to be reckoned with, clocking the fastest time for Ferrari. Hamilton won this race for Mercedes only a year ago and has since faced a challenging start to life with the Scuderia.

Behind Hamilton, the timesheets reflected a true British Grand Prix flavour. Norris, cheered on by fans across the circuit, narrowly edged his McLaren teammate and current points leader Oscar Piastri for second. Charles Leclerc, in the other Ferrari, made it two red cars in the top four, continuing an encouraging trend for the team after recent updates.

Total-Motorsport.com’s F1 2025 British GP live updates for Free Practice 2 will bring you real-time news, team developments, and more on-track clues for the weekend ahead. Stay with us as we bring you all the latest from FP2 at Silverstone.

Chequered flag in FP2

That’s the end of Friday’s action at Silverstone and this time it it Lando Norris who tops the time sheet. He produced a stunning lap on the soft tyre which neither of the Ferrari’s was able to beat, but Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton clearly have plenty of pace and should be competitive during the rest of the weekend.

7 minutes to go

McLaren boss Zak Brown has been praising Ferrari when speaking to Sky Sports F1 from the pitwall. He admits that they seem to be the competition right now and have one-lap pace as well as race-pace. Piastri is currently P4, meaning the McLaren’s are split by the two Ferrari’s.

11 minutes to go

Even though plenty of races have been and gone now, it’s always worth mentioning what Yuki Tsunoda is up too. He wasn’t in the car for FP1, but he is currently down in P15 and isn’t showing anything that would suggest this will be his breakthrough weekend with Red Bull. There is time, but it still seems to be a sad situation.

19 minutes to go

Hamilton has now put a lap together on the softs and he goes P3. Leclerc has cut the gap to Norris down to just over two tenths rather than four, but clearly the McLaren is more than a match for the Ferrari based on what we’re seeing here.

Verstappen has found some sort of pace now as he climbs to P5, but the Dutchman certainly hasn’t been lighting things up on Friday.

27 minutes to go

The situation changes again. Leclerc did go fastest on the soft, but Hamilton backed out of his lap. Norris has now come through and gone almost four tenths faster than Leclerc, showing there is a lot more lap time to be found on this track for the frontrunners.

32 minutes to go

Now that we’ve moved onto the soft tyre with many cars, the leaderboard is changing. Kimi Antonelli and George Russell now sit P1 and P2, and Hadjar is back up there in P3 on the softs. The Ferrari’s are back on track though and are surely about to go quicker…

39 minutes to go

We have to be prepared for the idea that the McLaren’s, Russell, and Verstappen have got more pace in reserve which they will deploy later in the weekend, but the two Ferrari’s keep swapping between P1 and P2 and seem very comfortable on this track. There have been many false dawns for Ferrari this season, but the early signs this weekend are promising.

48 minutes to go

He showed some pace in FP1 before some of the bigger boys started turning up the wick; Isack Hadjar could be someone to watch at Silverstone. He just spent some time in P1, as he did in FP1, but Hamilton has now gone back to the top.

54 minutes to go

Another strong start from the Ferrari’s here. We’re back to the medium tyres for most runners and Hamilton is on top, with Leclerc not far behind him.

FP2 just minutes away

Lewis Hamilton topped the timing sheet in FP1, much to the delight of the British crowd, and now the Ferrari man is going to see if he can do it again. The first session suggested that the two McLaren’s will be trying to stop him, along with Charles Leclerc and George Russell.

Max Verstappen will be trying to get in on the act given he only managed P10 in the first session.
