Toto Wolff hasn’t yet made a decision known to the public about who will be Mercedes’ second driver in the 2022 season, and this uncertainty hasn’t escaped the current pairing of Sir Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, with the latter suggesting the lack of contract security is actually damaging his title challenge this term.
Bottas signed a one-year extension at the end of 2020 to stave off the threat of George Russell taking his seat after a quite stupendous cameo drive in Bahrain, yet he has been offered little assurances of his future beyond 2021.
“It’s just guesses and assumptions based on how I feel right now, but it definitely would have saved me a lot of energy and extra pressure,” Bottas confirmed to ESPN.
“Having to deal with then media at certain times of the year has taken time and energy that could have been spent working with the team for the future.
“Not only would I be able to focus more on the current moment, but I would know that I’m with the team and I could focus on next year and all the improvements that you want to share with the team for the future.”
