F1 Fastest Lap – 2026 Azerbaijan GP

George Russell may have won, but was he the quickest driver at the Baku City Circuit?

George Russell may have been pushed all the way to the finish by Max Verstappen, but the Mercedes driver had another answer in the 2026 Azerbaijan GP as he recorded the Fastest Lap with a 1:44.916.

The effort came during a race in which Russell faced relentless pressure from Verstappen, particularly during the closing stages as his pace helped keep the charging Red Bull within reach but never ahead.

Russell established himself at the front early on and spent much of the race attempting to build a cushion over Verstappen and that advantage proved vital as the his rival carved through the field.

Verstappen started eighth but quickly made progress, passing Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc before moving into third and his recovery placed him well for a charge in the second half of the race.

Although by Lap 14, Russell had stretched his advantage to around seven seconds over Oscar Piastri, while Verstappen remained held up behind the McLaren and that gave the Mercedes driver valuable breathing room.

The race changed again when the leaders stopped on Lap 32 as Russell switched to soft tyres, while Verstappen also selected the soft compound, setting up a direct fight between the pair for the final stint.

A dramatic restart on Lap 35 brought them closer together as Russell went late at the restart, while Verstappen attacked Piastri into Turn 1, keeping himself firmly in contention as another safety car interruption followed.

Once racing resumed, Verstappen was coming but the Mercedes driver used Strat 7 in a bid to find extra pace. Still, the Red Bull refused to disappear and repeatedly closed to within one second.

Russell survives Verstappen charge

By Lap 42, Verstappen had Overtake Mode available and was consistently threatening the leader. Russell’s advantage had become fragile, but the Mercedes driver continued to hold the Red Bull behind.

The pressure remained intense but Russell’s fastest lap of 1:44.916 highlighted the pace required to stay ahead and his composure in the face of a charging Formula 1 champion on the final lap, but he still kept his Mercedes in front.

The margin could hardly have been closer. Russell crossed the line just under a tenth of a second ahead of Verstappen, securing victory after a late battle that demanded absolute concentration.

Russell therefore leaves the 2026 Azerbaijan GP with the victory and Fastest Lap of the day, having produced the pace needed to fend off one of the strongest drives of Verstappen’s season.
