F1 2024 Austrian GP – Sprint Race Results

Max Verstappen won the Sprint at the 2024 Austrian GP, heading the Sprint Race results ahead of Oscar Piastri at the Red Bull Ring

As the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix race weekend continues, Max Verstappen of Red Bull set the fastest time in the Sprint Race session, just ahead of Oscar Piastri in the McLaren, so don’t miss the complete Austrian GP Sprint Race results.

An exciting start at the Red Bull Ring saw Lando Norris, who was second on the Sprint grid, challenge Verstappen in the opening laps and at one point took the lead before the Dutchman quickly regained top spot where he stayed for the remainder.

Piastri took advantage of the battle between Verstappen and Norris to jump his McLaren teammate and hold on the second place in Austria. The Red Bull was complaining of clipping in his car early on, but as soon as that issue was resolved, Verstappen eased to victory.

The Sprint race victory further extends Verstappen‘s lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 71 points over Norris, with Charles Leclerc six points behind in third.

Verstappen vs McLaren in Sprint

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen converted his pole position into a Sprint race victory at the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, overcoming fierce competition from McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Verstappen maintained his lead at the start, but Norris quickly closed in and temporarily took P1 with a bold overtake.

The reigning world champion, however, reclaimed the lead shortly after, enabling Piastri to pass his teammate in the process. Despite the initial positions holding steady, the battle for the lead intensified. Norris, showing impressive pace, lit up the timesheets and closed in on Verstappen

On Lap 5, he made a daring move up the inside of Verstappen at Turn 3, briefly taking the lead. However, Verstappen swiftly responded with a lunge at Turn 4, reclaiming P1, while Norris‘s compromised exit allowed Piastri to slip past into second place.

As the race settled, Verstappen‘s focus shifted to maintaining a gap to Piastri. “I’m clipping way too much,” was the message from Verstappen over the team radio, as he worked to edge out of Piastri‘s DRS window. Meanwhile, George Russell fought back against Carlos Sainz, reclaiming fourth place with a clean pass between Turns 3 and 4.

Further back, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and George Russell maintained their positions around the Ferrari of Sainz. Hamilton, despite describing his qualifying session as “pretty disastrous” due to a mistake on his final run, held steady in fourth, while Russell kept close in sixth.

Leclerc, recovering from his Sprint Qualifying woes, moved up to seventh, showing strong pace throughout the race. Sergio Perez managed to secure the final point in eighth, adding to Red Bull’s overall tally.

Kevin Magnussen, who narrowly missed out on SQ3, put up a determined display in his Haas, finishing ninth. Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin and the Alpine duo of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, who had strong qualifying performances, were unable to translate that into race points, finishing just outside the top 10.

Nico Hulkenberg was given a 10 second time penalty for forcing another driver off the track which relegated him from 14th to 19th after the Sprint Race was over.
