F1 2024 Austrian GP – Practice 1 Results

Max Verstappen was fastest in Practice 1 at the 2024 Austrian GP heading the FP1 results ahead of Oscar Piastri at the Red Bull Ring

-

As the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix race weekend is underway, Max Verstappen set the fastest time in Free Practice 1 in his Red Bull, just ahead of Oscar Piastri in the McLaren, in the complete Austrian GP FP1 results.

The only practice session of the Austrian GP weekend at the Red Bull Ring, saw plenty of on track action as the teams gathered as much data ahead of Sprint Qualifying later on Friday. Verstappen secured the fastest lap with a time of 1:05.685s, edging out Oscar Piastri by just 0.276s, though the Dutchman had a sensor issues with his engine which brought out a brief red flag.

Lando Norris in the other McLaren was unable to put together a clean lap on the soft tyres, but on his only attempt he set the quickest first sector before running wide into the gravel at Turn 4. He eventually finished FP1 in 13th position.

With just one practice session as the Austrian GP is an F1 Sprint weekend, getting the set up on point and collecting data was fundamental for the teams as they head into Sprint Qualifying later on Friday.

Mercedes impress in FP1 at Austrian GP

Mercedes initially set the early pace with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on hard tyres, while Red Bull’s Verstappen and Sergio Perez followed on mediums.

Midway through the session, Verstappen’s car stopped on the start/finish straight with an “engine fault,” triggering red flags. However, after resetting the car, Verstappen returned to the track, avoiding a data deficit for Sprint Qualifying.

In the final 10 minutes, a flurry of laps on soft tyres saw Verstappen set the fastest time of 1:05.685s, ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Ferrari cars of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Mercedes’ Hamilton, remaining on hards, finished fifth, while Russell, hindered by traffic, placed eighth.

Esteban Ocon led the Alpine charge in sixth, with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll seventh. Yuki Tsunoda battled steering issues but finished ninth, and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top 10.
