George Russell topped FP3 at the 2026 Austrian GP as Mercedes completed another strong practice session at the Red Bull Ring.
Russell set a fastest time of 1:07.096 to finish just 0.038 seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, with Lewis Hamilton third for Ferrari.
It was the first time Russell had been ahead of Antonelli all weekend, with the Briton improving late in the session on a set of soft tyres that had already completed several laps. That left Mercedes with a one-two heading into qualifying, although Hamilton was only 0.115 seconds off the pace.
Oscar Piastri was fourth for McLaren, ahead of teammate Lando Norris, while Max Verstappen finished sixth for Red Bull Racing.

Russell beats Antonelli in final practice
Antonelli had dominated Friday, topping both FP1 and FP2, and he again looked like the driver to beat for much of FP3. The teenager moved to the top early with a 1:07.533 before lowering his benchmark to a 1:07.134.
But Russell found a late improvement on a used set of soft tyres, edging ahead by 0.038 seconds to end Antonelli’s run at the top. It was a timely response before qualifying, particularly after Antonelli had looked more comfortable in the Mercedes through much of the weekend.
The result also showed the C5 soft tyre could still produce performance on a second push lap, although the hot conditions made that far from guaranteed. Track temperatures climbed above 51 degrees Celsius during the session, leaving teams to manage thermal degradation as well as traffic on a short and busy lap.
Hamilton put Ferrari within striking distance in third, 0.115 seconds away from Russell, after a cleaner session than Friday. That was an encouraging step for Ferrari, who had looked further away during FP2.

McLaren and Red Bull Racing stay close
Piastri finished fourth for McLaren, 0.248 seconds off the top, after improving on his second flying lap. Norris was close behind in fifth, just 0.016 seconds slower than his teammate.
McLaren had looked competitive on Friday, especially in FP2, but FP3 suggested they may need a small step to challenge Mercedes and Ferrari for pole. Even so, the margins at the front remained tight, with the top six separated by less than three tenths of a second.
Verstappen ended the session sixth for Red Bull Racing, 0.273 seconds off the pace, after a delayed start to his programme. He was the final driver to appear on track, but still put himself close to the leading group.
Charles Leclerc was seventh in the second Ferrari, 0.356 seconds away from Russell, after running wide during one of his laps. Leclerc looked more comfortable than he had on Friday, but still trailed Hamilton heading into qualifying.
