Aston Martin was left with just one car on the grid for the 2025 Formula 1 Spanish GP, after Lance Stroll withdrew due to lingering pain in his hand and wrist with no replacement incoming.
Although the team had options to fill the seat, including reserve driver Felipe Drugovich and Mercedes backup Valtteri Bottas, strict FIA regulations made a substitution impossible.
Stroll, who had qualified 14th on Saturday, pulled out of the race late in the evening citing discomfort linked to a prior injury. The Canadian had undergone surgery following a cycling accident ahead of the 2023 season, and symptoms had reportedly resurfaced in recent weeks.
“Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023,” Aston Martin explained in an official statement.
Despite the long-standing nature of the injury, the timing of Stroll’s withdrawal left the team without any feasible route to install a replacement for the Spanish GP.
FIA rules block late changes after qualifying
According to Article 32.2 of the FIA Sporting Regulations, driver changes on standard grand prix weekends are only permitted before the start of qualifying.

The regulation specifies: “A change of driver may be made… at any time before the start of the qualifying session.” This rule exists to ensure sporting fairness and adequate preparation time for any substitute driver.
While provisions exist for “force majeure” exceptions, Aston Martin would have faced a difficult task convincing the stewards that Stroll’s worsening symptoms constituted an unforeseeable emergency. The team’s own admission that the issue had been developing for six weeks likely undermines any such argument.
With qualifying already completed, and the withdrawal confirmed hours later, the opportunity to make a legal substitution had passed. As a result, Aston Martin could not deploy either Drugovich or Bottas to fill the seat alongside Fernando Alonso, who now shoulders the team’s race-day hopes alone in front of his home fans.
Looking ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix, if Stroll remains unfit, Aston Martin will be able to nominate a replacement in advance of qualifying. That could open the door for Drugovich or another reserve to gain race time — but only if the team adheres to the required timelines.

Why didn’t Aston Martin replace Lance Stroll at the Spanish GP?
FIA rules prohibit teams from changing drivers after qualifying unless under force majeure, which Aston Martin could not prove in this case.
Who could Aston Martin have used to replace Lance Stroll?
Felipe Drugovich and Valtteri Bottas were available, but the late timing of Stroll’s withdrawal ruled out any legal substitution.
What does Article 32.2 of the FIA Sporting Regulations state?
It says teams may only change drivers before qualifying begins, unless exceptional force majeure conditions are accepted by the stewards.
