The Total Motorsport F1 Show podcast returns with a deep dive into the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix, where Kimi Antonelli announced himself as a genuine force in Formula 1 with a stunning maiden victory.
The young Mercedes star followed up his first pole position with a composed race win at the Shanghai International Circuit, leading home a second consecutive Silver Arrows one-two alongside George Russell, who remains at the top of the drivers’ standings after a strong Sprint performance.
In the latest episode, Ewan Gale, Brandon Sutton and Ed Spencer break down all the key talking points from Shanghai, including Mercedes’ early-season dominance and the growing concerns for rivals Red Bull and McLaren.
What’s discussed in this episode
The team analyses how Mercedes have established themselves as the benchmark under the new regulations, with Antonelli and Russell forming one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid.
There is also focus on the struggles elsewhere, particularly for Red Bull, who continue to battle performance and reliability issues, and McLaren, whose disastrous weekend saw them fail to even start the Grand Prix.
Another major talking point raised in the episode is Aston Martin’s situation, with questions asked over whether the team should be allowed to continue racing given their inability to consistently finish events and the potential safety implications for their drivers.

Is Antonelli already in a title fight?
A central debate from the episode is whether Antonelli is ready to fight for a world championship so early in his career. Gale believes the question may already be irrelevant.
“I don’t think it matters whether he is ready, he is in it,” he said. “That’s the bones of it really, isn’t it? Mercedes is miles ahead of everyone else, he is clearly quick enough to fight Russell. Whether he is ready or not, he is in the title fight.”

Spencer echoed that sentiment, suggesting the dynamic within Mercedes could become one of the defining storylines of the season.
“I have to say he is a title contender and I think he is going to pose a threat for George,” Spencer explained. “For the first time in a long while, I have seen Russell flustered and quite rattled to the point where I think Kimi could cause him some headaches in the long term.
“It reminds me of 1996 when Williams was head and shoulders above the field, and you had Damon Hill who had waited for his big chance and everyone thought he would cruise to the title until Jacques Villeneuve came around as a rookie and we had a scrap that went on until Suzuka.”
