All the new F1 driver helmets for 2024 Chinese Grand Prix

Formula 1 is back in China for the first time since 2019 and a number of drivers have new helmets to show off in Shanghai

Formula 1 finally returns to Shanghai for the first time since 2019 as the Chinese Grand Prix is back on the calendar once again and several drivers, including the home-hero, Zhou Guanyu, have introduced special helmets for the event.

The last time the turbo-hybrids roared around the Far East nation, Valtteri Bottas was the championship leader and Lewis Hamilton was winning races. Back then, it was the 1000th race in history and Lando Norris, George Russell and Alex Albon were all rookies. Whatever happen to that trio, eh?

So, with new ground effect cars, drivers who have never raced at the Shanghai International Circuit and a new Sprint Race format, the event could be thrust into chaos with a lack of knowledge across the grid. Will this be the most entertaining race of the season so far?

Find out with as we bring you live coverage across the weekend but for now, who was brought new helmets to the race and what do they look like?

First up is Zhou. The 24-year-old was born in the city hosting the F1 spectacle and now he returns to race in the event for the first time since he left China to move to Sheffield back in 2013.

To mark the occasion, the Sauber driver’s helmet is a strong base white with several different coloured lines running around it, green, yellow, gold, red and shades of blue as he honours the Shanghai underground.

On the back is the circuit layout with the track split up into the different sectors, whilst the top of the lid features his driver number (24) and logo in a blue colour with a drawing that spans away to the sides like dragon wings.

Cute pandas and Chinese iconography are also scattered around and there is a very personal and emotional picture of Zhou at the event with a Renault flag as a young child, showing how far the kid eager to hear V10 engines has come since.

Russell will also bring a new helmet to the Chinese GP, in perhaps a rather surprising driver to pay tribute to the race. His helmet features a golden Asian tiger on the back of a red-base helmet, a return to his original pre-Mercedes colour, with a Chinese dragon on the side and Chinese logographs on the side.

“China special edition helmet,” Russell posted onto, formerly Twitter. “There are so many cool details I wanted to bring forward to celebrate being back here in Shanghai.

“It feels great to be racing in China again and I wanted to celebrate with something special, I hope you like it!”

George Russell – Mercedes

Albon is the second of the three 2019 rookies still on the grid to release a special helmet for the Chinese GP, which has been on the calendar since 2004 continuously until Covid-19 interrupted it in 2020.

It isn’t hard to see what Albon has used for inspiration as his special lid is a black and white panda. The giant panda is a native species to China and is one of the nation’s global symbols and associations, and Albon has used it to form a cool helmet for 2024.

Brown eyes with the famous panda eye patches are just above the Thai-British driver’s visor, with a mouth found just below the air intake inlets as the panda design smiles for the fans and the Williams car.

Ears are at the top of the lid before a black section arches from the sides to the top of the helmet before transitioning back to white at the back of the lid, where Albon‘s driver logo is showcased with his 23 number not too far above it.

Alex Albon – Williams
