All the new F1 driver helmet designs for the Australian GP 2024

With F1 visiting Albert Park for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix, a number of drivers have unveiled some eye-catching helmet designs for the occasion

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and RB’s Daniel Ricciardo will celebrate their home race in Australia with new lids as the Oceania nation has two drivers on the grid in Melbourne for the first time since 2013. Sauber‘s Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will also rock a one-off helmet for the weekend.

Ricciardo, who has never finished on the podium in the event after being disqualified in 2014, will sport a design featuring a Honey badger, and a series of red and yellow florals with a white under-base along with the usual Red Bull logos.

Inscribed on the front is the word “Yes”, perhaps serving as motivation for the eight-time race winner to deliver as he bids to bounce back from a poor start to the 2024 season, which could reward him with a seat next to Max Verstappen for 2025 if he gets it together.

Either way, even if he does underperform, he can leave with his head held high as the lid is designed by Rosie Pettenon. The youngster won the competition to design the helmet after it was opened to young Australian artists and it will be auctioned following the race on Sunday to raise funds for the Save The Children charity.

A truly noble gesture from the 34-year-old.

Meanwhile Piastri, into his second season and race at the Albert Park Circuit, has gone for a design that’s far more reminiscent of Australian iconography as it features a deep orange background with lots of kangaroos and acacia trees. The secondary colour on his lid is the same shade of blue that features on the national flag.

Faintly written into the orange in a lighter shade is “Melbourne”, whilst OP81 decorates the top of the design. Will he bounce his way up to the podium after kicking away any competition following a strong performance in Saudi Arabia?

Oscar Piastri

If you had to bet on someone bringing a special lid down under outside of the Aussie pair, it would’ve probably been Valtteri Bottas, who has sort of been culturally adopted by the people.

And the mullet-sporting Finn, who is in a relationship with Tiffany Cromwell, has not failed to live up to the hype as he also revealed a special helmet for the event.

His girlfriend, Cromwell, is an Australian road and gravel cyclist who has been with the Sauber driver since February 2020, and she has regularly won events in her sport so her culture has definitely rubbed off on him.

One part of that inspiration appears to be barbeques as this is the entire theme of the ex-Mercedes driver’s helmet. The lid is charcoal black and features his perfect hotdog combination of “sausage, white bread, onion and tomato sauce”, with a hotdog being set on fire near a barbeque just below.

He also shows artwork of mustard sauce and tomato sauce being squirted out of bottles to offer a much needed change of colour to the black base, whilst the top of the lid features a hotdog enjoying the cook out. It is accompanied by a phrase reading, “I’m here for the sausage sizzle, Melbourne, ‘Straya. 77.”

Valtteri Bottas

Bottas‘ teammate, Zhou Guanyu, has produced a one-off design that’s aqua blue with Australian blue as the secondary colour. It’s decorated with white spots, a “vacation” sticker, a koala and a kangaroo hopping over a “Melbourne” sign.

It also pokes fun at Bottas, who appears on the back of the lid just below a “racing down under” sticker with a kangaroo warning sign. The 34-year-old with his mullet and moustache will be watching Zhou‘s back in the 58-lap race.

Zhou even showed off his humour as he dressed up in blonde hair and a blonde moustache, poking fun at Bottas and the Australian stereotypical look as he showed his colleague the helmet which features his traditional logo on top.
